Welcome to Christ Church Westshore! If you have found yourself on this blog, you might be wondering what we mean by "The Sacraments." Watch our video continue reading to learn more!
A sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.
At Christ Church Westshore, as the Bible teaches us, we believe that there are two great sacraments: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
The Great Commission
"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
-Matthew 28
Baptism is the sign of being signed, sealed, and delivered from your sins by faith in Christ. So, when you are baptized as an adult, that shows that you have been crucified with Christ.
If you decide to have your child baptized, that is the sign showing that this child is going to be raised up in the faith. Does that necessarily mean that that child is saved at that moment, and they will continue in the faith their whole life? No, it does not. But what it does mean is that you as a parent are committing to raising that child up in the faith of Christ.
The Lord's Supper, Communion, or the Eucharist is also an outward and visible sign of the grace that's extended to us in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The bread representing the body of Jesus Christ, and the wine representing the blood of Jesus Christ.
We know that we have our hearts greatly warmed as we receive the mercy Grace of Jesus Christ within the bread and wine each and every week, because it's his performance, not ours, as we seek to follow Christ together.
And therefore, we come to the Lord's table each and every week living into the promises of our baptism, calling us back to those each and every week.
